J. Stewart Hollingsworth
July 14, 1936 - February 19, 2016
Stew, 79, passed away on February 19, 2016, following a long battle with cancer. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
He grew up in Midland, TX, and moved to Colorado where he graduated from Colorado School of Mines. After college he went to work for Union Carbide as a geologist, exploring for uranium in Uravan, Australia, South Africa, and Canada. Other mining projects he worked on were for vanadium in Arkansas and a tungsten project in Portugal. While in Canada, he was the Manager of Exploration. Upon returning to Grand Junction, he was promoted to Manager of Union Carbide's exploration in North American. When Union Carbide's mining interest were sold, he did consulting for various other companies throughout the years.
With the downturn of mining, a lifetime interest in fossils became a second career as a bio-stratigrapher in the Lower Cambrian. Several new species of trilobites found in Nevada were named by him and are in the Smithsonian Institute. He had articles published in the Journal of Paleontology and has given many presentations at Cambrian events around the world.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; sister, Donna Truax; brother, Russell Hollingsworth; children, J.R. Hollingsworth, Darren (Holly) Hollingsworth, Karen Whitlock, Sara (Tim) Davis, and grandchildren, Dana (Jonathan) Ashcraft, Shannon Whitlock, and W. Stewart Hollingsworth.
Services will be held at Callahan-Edfast Funeral Home on February 27, at 11:00 a.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Colorado School of Mines, 1500 Illinois Street, Golden, CO 80401, or HopeWest Hospice 3090B N. 12th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
