

Retired Army Sergeant Major Kenneth Milton Zortman born and raised in Delta, Colorado peacefully departed on 20th of December, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer. He faced this chapter of his life with strength and bravery while never losing his positive spirit. Kenneth loved to tell stories fueled by his many hunting and fishing adventures and had a passion for the outdoors, particularly when shared with children, grandchildren and friends. Actively engaged in his church, his example of service and love was greatly appreciated by all those surrounding him. He recognized with gratitude all the skilled caregivers and family members who served and loved him throughout this journey.
Born to Milton and Dorothy Zortman, Kenneth, the second of four boys, grew up on the farm where he learned the value of hard work and mischievous play with his younger brothers. He and his younger brothers enjoyed playing football and wrestling throughout high school preparing him to successfully raise his own three sons. Graduating from Delta High School, he pursed two years of college before embarking on a fulfilling 23-year military career in the United States Army.
After retiring from the military, Kenneth further pursued his passions with careers in education, tax preparations and services, and dedicated 18 years to Jewel Cave National Monument as a Park Ranger. With his geological knowledge and talent for story telling enriched the cave tours and captivated visitors from all over the globe. Upon retiring from the Park Service, he and his wife created life long memories while visiting Australia, Ireland, Mexico, Canada, and various wonderful location in the United States.
Surviving him is his wife of 53 years, Karen (Van Ornam), his three sons, Sean and Laurel Zortman, Joseph and Aurora Zortman and David and Heather Zortman, seven grandchildren, three step grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, (Old grandpa) leaves a legacy of love. His youngest brother Steve and family also survive him. Preceded by his parents, grandparents, two brothers and two nieces who await a joyful reunion.
Services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints in the Fruitvale building on January 4, 2024, followed with interment at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado in Grand Junction.
