Lillian was born April 3, 1924 in Elk Springs, Colorado to parents Thomas Waller Barnes and Mary (Davis) Barnes. She was one of four children; all siblings have preceded her in death. She grew up in Lily Park and graduated from Hayden Union High School. She went on to graduate from Barnes Business School in Denver and was later employed by D&RG Railroad. Lillian met her future husband C.E. Pickering, or “Pick”, in Denver and they were married on January 15, 1946. After a few years, they moved to Hayden. Lillian and Pick moved to Grand Junction in 1952, where they raised their children and operated a small plumbing contracting business for many years. She also drove a school bus for about twenty years. Lillian, Pick and two others were the instigators and founders of the Orchard Mesa Little League Organization. Her husband precedes her in death.
Lillian loved Jim Reeves, Tennessee Ernie Ford, big band dance music, pinochle, camping, fishing, and studying the history of northwest Colorado. She was also an ardent Rockies and Broncos fan.
Lillian leaves behind two sons, Don Pickering of Grand Junction, and Doug (Julie) Pickering of Dolores, Colorado; two grandchildren, Tom (Vanessa) Pickering and Kevin Pickering, both of Grand Junction; and four great grandchildren, Braden, Dylan, Jordan, and Mandy.
