Lois Carol Dietmeyer was a beloved grandmother, mother, wife and friend during her incredible 97 years of life. She passed away peacefully in the early hours of August 1, 2024, one day and 30 years after her beloved husband passed away.
Lois—known as Grandma Lois by her 8 grandchildren and Gigi by her 21 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren— had a long, full life. Born on September 28, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois to Christian Unrath and Freida Heimal, Lois graduated 12th grade in Glen Ellyn, Illinois and married the love of her life, Harold Dietmeyer—whom she affectionately called Ditty—on April 27, 1946 after he returned from World War II.
Lois and Harold raised their 3 children—Diane, Bruce and Gary—in Ingleside, Illinois. In 1978, they retired and moved to Mountain Home, Arkansas where they enjoyed summers filled with square dancing, bowling, card games, and swimming in the Lake Norfolk and winters in Mesa, Arizona.
After Harold passed, Lois joined her family in Grand Junction, Colorado where she became an active volunteer at Community Hospital and a member of Calvary Bible Chapel. Wherever she went, Lois built a community of friends with a common bond of games, from Shuffleboard to Bridge. Her grandchildren remember playing countless games of Rummikub, Hand and Foot and Kings on the Corner, while her friends enjoyed Bridge, Pinochle and Rummy alongside her.
Lois was an avid walker and swimmer. She enjoyed good food, watching hummingbirds play and time spent with family. She was a kind woman with a great sense of humor.
Lois was predeceased by Harold Dietmeyer (husband), Diane Duncan (daughter), Albert Unrath (brother), and Helen Penton (her older sister and best friend). She is survived by her two sons, Gary and Bruce Dietmeyer, and her 8 grandchildren—Linde Marshall, Jessica Trimble, Adam Dietmeyer, Eric Dietmeyer, Kristen Dietmeyer, Carolyn Roberts, Frank Duncan and Eric Duncan.
A service will be held at Calvary Bible Chapel located at 629 27 ½ Road on Saturday, August 24 at 10 am. Pastor Graham Parker will be presiding.
A special thanks to the wonderful staff at the Fountains and the amazing HopeWest caregivers who blessed us so richly with their care.
We will miss her dearly, but we are so grateful for the time we had and memories we made with her. In her words: “They will know we are Christians by our love.” May we love one another well, like you loved us, Lois.
