Marjorie ""Marge"" Gunderson
May 21, 1941 - September 10, 2015
Marjorie Gunderson, 74, passed away peacefully on Thursday September 10, 2015, in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Marge was born on May 21, 1941, in Lewiston, Utah to Vivian Gamble and Elizabeth Weaver. Her childhood was the foundation of her love of the outdoors and zest for life. Her dad would often take her fishing when he traveled in his work. Marge rode her horse everyday over a ten year period ending with her going to LDS Business College in Salt Lake City, Utah. After graduation she began her legal secretary career which lasted until she retired at the age of 62.
Marge taught herself to ski, did some ski racing, and then spent three years in Aspen, Colorado where she fell in love with motorcycles. She moved to Redondo Beach, California; Pocatello, Idaho and then to Boise, Idaho where she raised her two daughters who were her pride and joy. After being divorced for eight years, she met the love of her life, Steve Gunderson, and was married for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls Temple. They had been married for over 31 years at the time of her passing. They moved to Grand Junction about 12 years ago where her love and involvement in the outdoors intensified.
While mountain biking she sustained a spinal cord injury about two years ago that partially paralyzed her and recently made it difficult to overcome a pneumonia and numerous infections. Until this injury, Marge was extremely active. She and Steve were ski instructors with Colorado Discover Ability where they loved volunteering. Marge won three gold medals at the Huntsman World Senior Games in mountain biking and a silver medal in road bicycling. Steve and Marge hiked four 14,000 foot peaks, enjoyed motorcycling, camping, adventures in their RV, riding her mountain and road bicycles with many of her lady friends, cruising around the globe and spending time with her family and friends.
Marge was thought to be much younger physically than she actually was. She was even featured in the national Women's Adventure magazine with an article titled ""Fast"" Women Have More Fun. Marge enjoyed time with her grandchildren and sharing her love of biking when they came to visit. She was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had a strong testimony of her Savior, Jesus Christ. Marge was loved and admired by all, and greeted everyone with ""Hi My Friend."" She will be missed immensely.
Marge is survived by her husband, Steven Douglas Gunderson; daughters, Wendy Lori Newsom of Grand Junction, and Trina Lynn (Michael) Vickers of Pleasant Grove, Utah; step-son, Christopher Douglas (Diana) Gunderson; step-daughters, Sherry Leigh (Frank) Armijo and Alysia Ann (Derek) Johnson, and her nine grandchildren.
Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 16, at 12 noon at the Monument Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 2235 Kingston Avenue, Grand Junction, Colorado preceded by a viewing on Tuesday September 15 from 6 - 8:00 p.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary at 2515 Patterson Road, Grand Junction, Colorado and prior to the funeral from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.. She will be laid to rest at the New Elmwood Cemetery at 1175 17 ¼ Road, Fruita, Colorado.
