Mr. Toops was my 5th and 6th grade teacher at Rose Avenue, 1981-1983. He was my most favorite teacher and I will always remember him fondly. He is always the answer to my 'secret question' :) I especially remember he liked fruit so I organized a fruit basket drive for him - I can't remember if it was for his birthday or something else, but I think he appreciated it :D
 I'm sad to hear he is gone but so happy and not surprised to see that he had a long, happy life. He really inspired so many people! xoxo

I had a great fondness for Mr. Toops. I tried looking him up several years ago on the internet and was never able to find him. I was recently telling my husband about him and how I learned history in the 5th grade because of his passion for it. That is when I decided to try again and search his name. I’m truly saddened to learn of his passing. I didn’t realize his was a veteran, but it makes much more sense now. I wish I was able to tell him how much he meant to me as a teacher and how welcoming he made me  feel...I think I was teacher’s pet :). I am now 44 and Mr. Toops holds a very special place in my heart as my favorite teacher, who I had in the 5th grade at Rose Avenue Elementary School, as I still remember him and continue to talk about how wonderful he was in our class. We had the honor of interviewing Mr. Toops as a part of our Veterans Remember video series at Mesa County Libraries. He told his story with a great sense of humor and he let us borrow and digitize some amazing memorabilia from his time in the service. His video interview can be found on YouTube under "Robert Toops veteran". It was a true honor to meet and listen to Mr. Toops. My deepest condolences go to the Toops family and his friends.

He was my great uncle. He always made the funniest jokes. He’s make me laugh. When I was a bit younger I had spent the night at the house of theirs. I remember waking up early around 7. He was always awake before me. He would love walking. He always would talk about his day at church. We talked about the students he had, and the time he spent in he navy. All were interesting stories. He’d always listen to me about my day too. He’s missed and loved by all.                                                      ~His niece’s daughter

He was my great uncle. He would tell me stories about his years in teaching. We’d have great talks about life. I’m glad he lived a happy long life. 

Bob Toops was a one of a kind teacher, friend, and military veteran.  I loved inheriting Bob’s former students in my 6th grade classroom because they were so well prepared in academics, responsibility, and discipline.  Bob was a role model for giving back to others through community service.  Many of our military veterans benefited when Bob provided transportation and emotional support to those seeking medical care at the VA Hospital.  One of my favorite memories will always be when Bob honored me with his attendance and spoke at my retirement party in June of 2010.  Bob will be deeply cherished and missed by all who knew him.

Bob and I were colleagues for 18 years at Rose Ave. School in Oxnard, CA and we have been friends for a much longer time. I have enjoyed being friends with him all these years.  After he retired in 1988 we continued to talk on the phone until his passing. He had a marvelous sense of humor and enjoyed telling stories of his life. He will be missed by many of his colleagues as well as students and their parents. Rest in Peace, Bob!
