Scott grew up in Colorado and graduated from Canon City High School in 1988. Scott moved to Missouri to be with his Dad and Grandma and while the 80’s came to an end Scott’s love of the decade never did. Music movies and fashion from the 80’s always had a place in Scott’s heart. He had several different jobs, but he frequently spoke about working at the Bingo hall. Scott moved to Oklahoma with his Grandma and began working at Walmart where he found a second family at store 246. Scott delighted in working with people from all walks of life and teaching them the tips, tricks and life lessons he had accumulated over the years. Outside of Walmart Scott loved watching movies, especially Gone With the Wind, cooking, trivia games, and being with his cats. Scott loved to surprise others and throw parties (many of which were the stuff of legends).
Scott had an easy going personality that allowed him to blend in to every situation and to make himself a part of any conversation. Underlying that easy going personality was a razor sharp wit and an endearing stubbornness. He had a tremendous capacity to give, whether it was material items, time or emotional support. He enjoyed a deep bond with his Grandmother and was there to help her through the twilight of her life. Scott delighted in children and was blessed with numerous nieces and nephews. He was especially close to his cousins Jay and Becky’s children and valued being a close part of their childhood while live in Oklahoma.
Scott was first diagnosed with colon cancer in 2012 and following a June 2012 surgery he was only expected to live one to three months. His strength, endurance and sheer force of will allowed him to far surpass the grim expectations of his diagnosis. Scott was not content to simply live out the rest of his days wallowing in self pity but rather continued to live a full life that included full time work, friends and family. It was through the love he shared with so many friends and family members that he was able to endure his battle for so long. Ultimately death is undefeated against mere mortals, but Scott didn’t leave this world without one hell of a fight.
In the last few weeks of his life Scott returned to Colorado to be close to his mother and sisters. Scott J. Captain of Skiatook, OK, passed away in Grand Junction, CO, on August 25, 2015 surrounded by his girls.
