Alexander “Smitty” Smith was the sixth child born to Minister General Lee Smith and Annie Lee May in Sassafras Fork Township, Granville Co., North Carolina. Smitty accepted Christ at a young age, while attending Micah Creek Baptist Church. After graduating from Mary Potter High School in Oxford, NC, he was called to the draft for WWII. Smitty served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945. After the military, he moved to New York, taking a job with the railroad at Penn Station until retirement.
A former widower, Smitty married his friend, Martha James. Although the newlyweds were past retirement, they were blessed with over 20 years together. The couple eventually relocated to Texas, residing with Martha’s granddaughter Trevell and husband Howard. There they attended church and spent days with friends at The Summit Senior Center.
Smitty was a man of God. He ended every telephone conversation with “You pray for me, and I’ll pray for you”. Smitty spoke to the Lord constantly and was seldom seen without his Bible in hand. Even as his mind was fading, Smitty could recite a scripture without fail. His final words to caregivers, family and friends were “I Love You.”
Smitty was blessed with a long, full life in reasonably good health well into his 90s. He is preceded in death by wife Martha, his parents, and siblings Belle, Lucille, Willie Lee, John, Joseph and William. Celebrating his life are four generations of family, plus a host of friends.
