

Alta Marie Booth Brown, 84, of Grand Prairie, TX, was born March 8, 1927 in Cross Plains, TX to George B. Booth and Ruby Porter Booth. Alta passed away on June 1, 2011. On December 22, 1944, Alta married the love of her life, Howard James Brown of Toccoa, GA. Fortuitously for their 66.5 yrs of marriage, Howard was stationed at Camp Bowie in Brownwood as a PFC in the 13th Armored Division. They moved to Grand Prairie in 1951 where Howard started his own business and Alta became his bookkeeper and began her lifelong commitment to GP and its schools. Alta held several PTA offices over the years including PTA President and City Council PTA President. She also volunteered as Girl Scout Business Manager for north Texas summer camps, helped to start Grand Prairie’s Woman’s Club and held her charter membership until her death; was past president and vice president of the GP AARP, held a seat on the Council of Aging appointed by Mayor Charles England of GP, and continued as Precinct Chairman for voting precinct 4516 in GP and over the years was very active with the 1st United Methodist Church in Sunday School and Women’s groups. She and Howard volunteered at the GP Tourist Information Center every Tuesday morning for over 16 years where she loved to tell visitors about her hometown of Grand Prairie and the DFW area. Alta was a firm believer in higher education and took many accounting and business classes although never obtained a degree. She and Howard put both daughters through TCU and she was very proud of her only grandson’s engineering degrees from SMU. Alta was a loving and loyal wife, wherever you saw Alta, Howard was surely close by. She was the most wonderful of Mom’s and the best ever Granny, the best of friends, the staunchest of allies, and will be so very missed and never forgotten. Alta is preceded in death by both parents, her oldest daughter, Shirley Jean Brown Floyd and her oldest grandson, Samuel Howard Sutton. She is survived by her husband, Howard James Brown, her youngest daughter, Linda Joy Brown Sutton, her son-in-law whom she loved like a son, Larry Samuel Sutton, her so very loved only grandson, Samuel James Sutton and her granddaughter-in-law, Jennifer Nicole Luken Sutton, who brought Alta so much happiness.
Viewing will be held Friday evening, June 3rd from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Bean-Massey, Burge Funeral Home, Grand Prairie.
Funeral Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Grand Prairie, on Saturday, June 4th at 12:00 noon. Burial will be in the family plot at Cross Plains Cemetery, Cross Plains, TX.
