

When Gene was 14 years old he was misdiagnosed and had heart surgery due to Rheumatic Fever. He spent 2 years at Baylor Hospital and was not considered to make it. That was not an option and he showed everyone just how tough he really was. At 17 years old he received his GED and went to computer school.
In 1965 he met Linda at the mall where they both worked. They were married February 3, 1966. Gene began working for Ross Perot with the EDS. He was the 10th employee for Mr. Perot. Eventually; he started working as an independent insurance agent. He continued doing insurance for 30years. Gene was a jokester who was not only full of stories but good at telling them. He was a good friend, highly respected and a devoted father. He adored his wife and was very involved with his children and grandchildren.
Gene had integrity and love for sports. He cheered for the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers. He was called by many names but the most used name was Coach! He started coaching his son’s baseball team in 1974. In 1988 he got involved with the Grand Prairie Boys Baseball. He is the current President for the Grand Prairie Boys Baseball and also the North Texas State Director for USSSA. When the previous director left the company Gene’s reputation led to him getting the job. In the past 8 years that he has been running tournaments for USSSA, he has become the #1 largest tournaments director in the USA.
Gene was a hard coach but all the players respected him for it. He also had the ability to get his point across without having to raise his voice at the boys. During his coaching, he won more than 30 city championships with various age teams. Several of his players moved on to college baseball where they took the wisdom and skills he taught, to help make their new team better. Gene loved teaching baseball so much he would teach anyone who asked for his help even if they were on an opposing team.
Coach Gene was a one of a kind man who touched thousands of lives through baseball. He will be forever missed and never forgotten.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents Brooks Campbell and Bennie Mae Sanders; son Carey Allen Campbell and brother Danny Campbell.
Survived by his wife Linda Campbell; son Tim Campbell; grandchildren Jessica Cooper and her husband Ben, Jayci Campbell, Jaydin Campbell, Kaylin Campbell, Jordyn Campbell, Easton Campbell; sisters Sonya Bilbrey and her husband Robert, Diana Campbell; brother Joe Musgreve; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephew.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Bean Massey Burge Funeral Home from 7-9pm.
Services will be Friday, January 16, 2015 at The Oaks Baptist Church in Grand Prairie at 1pm.
