Gloria Jean Moss passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. She is preceded in death by her parents: father, Bernard Murphy; mother, Mamie Murphy Denny; stepfather, Phil Denny; siblings: sisters Sue Mars and Jo Campbell and brother, Phil Denny, Jr.; brothers-in-law Larry Moss and Neal Moss and his wife Johnny Jean Moss. Gloria is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 60 years, Marcus Wayne Moss; her son and the love of her life, Nelson Wayne Moss his wife Cindie; her precious granddaughter, Gloria Michelle, who was truly her pride and joy, and her husband Jon Carroll; sisters, Pat Rutland and husband Terry; Bernadette Kinslow; Bonnie Holt; Phylis Hazel; sisters-in-law, Lisa Denny and Wanda Morrison and husband Mike; and brother-in-law Roscoe Campbell; a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Gloria grew up in a family of 8 children and even though they never had much in the way of material possessions, they were blessed with the possession of unconditional love for each other and a bond that would last a lifetime. Their Christmases have always been spent together and always will be. Although Gloria is a beautiful name, she rarely got to hear it used. Being raised in East Texas, her name was pronounced “Glory”. That did not bother her especially since Wayne always called her that. Later, Nelson warmly referred to her as “Hollywood” and that was more appropriate than he realized because she was a shining star in so many ways.
Gloria met her soulmate while still in high school and she and Wayne married on June 23, 1964. Wayne was in the Army and Gloria adapted to military life immediately. They were so excited to welcome their son Nelson, the following year. Being an only son, he got all the attention but that also meant he got ALL the attention – it was hard to pull something over on them. Then as Gloria and Wayne got older, the table turned, and Nelson always kept close tabs on them while also trying to make sure all their needs were met as best he could. After her granddaughter, Gloria Michelle was born in 1990, she felt that their family had then blossomed to perfection and she let everyone know that while their grandchildren might be special, Gloria Michelle was even more so in every way – she was gorgeous, brilliant, talented, witty and charming. They loved getting to pick her up from daycare and school and dote on her and watch her develop into the lovely lady she is today.
Gloria worked in the banking industry for many years and made such close friends there. She absolutely loved doing cross-stitch and her work was amazing. So many of us are blessed to have her work displayed throughout our homes. Gloria and Wayne loved traveling and made numerous trips, some with family and some just the two of them. As a lover and collector of Precious Moments figurines, she never missed a trip with her sister Bonnie to go to the Precious Moments Convention every year and did they ever have stories to tell when they got back! They even made an appearance on TV on one of those trips. Gloria loved the Dallas Mavericks and tried to never miss seeing their games. Gloria always had a love for dogs and butterflies, and she treated her puppies like a child.
You could always count on Gloria to join in every family event and help plan, organize, coordinate, buy supplies, set up and clean up but regardless how big or small the part she played, she always said the words “I have to do everything!”. She truly was one of the most kind, loving and generous women who never hesitated to share anything she had including her time, her talents, and her beautiful laugh.
Gloria will be so terribly missed by all who loved her but knowing that she formed her own wings of a butterfly and flew to a beautiful place to reunite with all who had gone before helps make our loss of her here on earth a little less painful.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Legion Post 424, 3940 S. Ledbetter Dr., Dallas, Texas 75236.
