

Irene grew up in Alvord, Texas and graduated from Decatur High School as a high honor student. She attended Decatur Baptist University (currently Dallas Baptist University), received a scholarship to Mary-Hardin Baylor and received her Bachelor’s Degree in English from North Texas State University. While attending N.T.S.U her roommate introduced her to Isaac Roger Day. They were married June 6, 1942 in Decatur, Texas.
In 1954 they settled down with their family in Grand Prairie, Texas. Irene was a member of Wise County Historical Society and Inglewood Baptist Church. She was very intellectual and enjoyed painting, reading and sewing. Irene was a great cook who valued family and education above all. She spent her free time working around her house and always cared for her family any way she could. She was a dedicated wife and mother, loving grandmother and great-grandmother.
Irene is preceded in death by her husband Isaac Roger “I.R.” Day; parents F.W. Volkman, Laura Pillers Volkman and brother Wayne Volkman and his wife Maxine.
She is survived by her children: Betty McRay and her husband Ricky, Barbara Aves, Carol Day, Billy Day; grandchildren: Brian McRay and his wife, Kala, Barry McRay and his wife, Kristal, Alex Aves, Candace Hooks; great-grandchildren: Josh Aves, Blaine McRay, Tyler Weaver, Paytlin Weaver, Tori McRay; sister Olene Mimms and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.
