Janis Carletta Holt Smith, was born on May 2, 1935, in Brady, Texas; first born to Carl and Earlene Holt. She graduated from Abilene High School in 1953. She met her husband, E. D. Smith through a dear mutual friend and they married in July 1963.
Jan and ‘Smitty’ ran a successful retail business (The Daisy Patch) in Abilene till their move to the DFW area in 1975, at which time Jan went back into banking. She retired from Chase Bank as a Credit Analyst, but her fondest memories were of her time as a teller. She always loved the fact that customers would stand in line to see her even when other tellers were open. She valued people as individuals and made them feel special. She knew them by name and would brighten their day with her smile and humor.
Jan was a true optimist. She always saw the silver lining in any situation and responded to each of us “you can do it!” at one point or another. She would give encouragement, consolation, or a shoulder to lean on to anyone who needed it.
She loved to travel when she was able to do it, and her crafts were a passion later in life. She put care and love into the pieces that she created and enjoyed seeing someone light up from a gift made just for them. Whatever Jan did, she did fully with open arms. And when she left this world on July 21, 2022, she was surrounded by all five of her children, Randy, Rick and Craig Skaggs, Sheri Hartzell and Shanna Smith.
She is survived by her sister; sister-in-law; nieces; nephews; her five children; daughter-in-law; 8 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A small memorial service celebrating her life will be held on August 13, 2021 at 2 p.m. at 1300 Saturn Drive, Cedar Hill, TX, 75014.
