Brooks was born in Brownwood, Texas to his parents, Andy L. Teague and Lois Brooks Teague. He was the oldest of 3 siblings, and raised on a farm near Brownwood, Texas. He accepted Christ as his savior and was baptized at the age of 12 at Rocky Creek Baptist Church, his family’s home church.
At the age of 18, he served a little over 2 years in the Air Force during World War II. After discharge, he attended Howard Payne College, receiving his Bachelor’s degree and later received his Master’s degree from Hardin-Simmons University. Upon completion of his Bachelor’s degree, he moved to Colorado City, Texas, where he taught High School Math. It is here that he met the love of his life, Dean. She was the church secretary at First Baptist Church, Colorado City and Brooks was the Interim Music Leader. They married August 20, 1952. Later, Brooks became an Elementary School Principal and Dean taught 3rd grade. While in Colorado City, they had two children – Andy and Susan.
In 1968, the family moved to Irving, Texas where Brooks served as an Elementary School Principal for 12 years, Director of Special Education for 2 and a half years, and principal of a Junior High School for 2 and a half years. During this time, the family was active in Plymouth Park Baptist Church in Irving. Brooks and Dean retired from public schools in 1984 and moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to be near Dean’s side of the family. While there, they attended and served in various volunteer capacities in First Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa. Brooks served 11 years on the Alabama Baptist State Education Commission and was named “Man of the Year” in 1992 by the Tuscaloosa County Baptist Association. He was very active with the AARP Tax Preparation Program for Senior Adults and with Habitat for Humanity.
In 1998, Brooks and Dean moved back to Grand Prairie, Texas and joined First Baptist Church of Grand Prairie, where they song with the Serendipity Singers Choir, taught Sunday School, and Brooks worked with Master Builders. They enjoyed serving in the Food Pantry and Brooks helped to build stage props for VBS, choir programs, and other uses. He served as a Deacon and on several committees. Brooks was the primary caregiver for Dean in their later years as her health declined and dementia progressed. In September, 2016, they both moved in Colip House Assisted Living Home, where Brooks watched over Dean’s care as well as received the daily assistance he needed. After Dean’s death in February, 2020, Brooks health continued to decline. In the last days of his life, he received additional care through Cornerstone Hospice.
Brooks was preceded in death by his parents, Andy L. and Lois B. Teague and by his siblings, A.L. Teague, Jr. and Joyce Irene Krause.
He is survived by his children, Andy and Susan; and by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and by other family members and friends.
