On Sunday, May 25, 2025, John Martin of Ovilla, Texas, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, love, and wisdom. John is survived by his beloved wife, Patsy; his daughter, Stephanie Wooldridge (Jeff); his son, Christopher Gonzalez (Lyric); and his cherished grandchildren: John, Charlotte, Bryn, and Jayden. He is also remembered with deep affection by countless extended family members and friends who were touched by his kindness and steady presence.
Born and raised in Grand Prairie, Texas, to Johnnie and Janet Martin, John embraced a life of service and integrity from an early age. He worked alongside his father at the family’s Conoco gas station, pursued college studies, and proudly served in the U.S. Army. His professional life was marked by dedication and purpose, spending 38 years with the Social Security Administration, where he earned the respect and admiration of all who knew him and made lifelong friendships.
John was far more than a devoted husband and father, loyal friend, and “best papa ever” — he was also a mentor, a gifted storyteller, and a gentleman in every sense. His generosity was instinctive, well-known for overtipping at restaurants, and his humor was always effortless. Whether you needed a steady hand, a heartfelt lesson, or a simple laugh, John was always there with his clever wisdom, affectionately known as “Johnisms”— his signature sayings that carried profound meaning beyond the moment.
John made everyone feel welcome and he had a knack for bringing people together. Whether it was hosting holidays at home, serving up legendary brisket at his Cedar Creek Lake retreat, or enjoying Thanksgiving tailgates at Cowboys Stadium – John made memories wherever he went. He was an avid sportsman who loved playing football, softball, golf, bowling, and fishing, and he was equally passionate about traveling, collecting and selling antiques, and caring for his immaculate yard. He loved experiencing other parts of the country, especially New Mexico, in search of great food, music and the arts.
Above all, John Martin was a man of heart. We are honored to have been loved by him, and we are forever grateful for the lessons, laughter, and love he gave so freely. His impact lives on in the lives he touched, and the stories we will continue to tell in his honor.
A memorial will be held on Friday, June 27th at 11:15 a.m. at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, with a celebration of life immediately following at FireHouse Gastro Park, 321 Main Street in Grand Prairie. All who knew and loved him are warmly invited to gather and honor the memory of a truly remarkable man.
