Cathalene Fay Ryzy, 83, of Grand Rapids, passed away on May 28, 2023 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Cathy was born on August 19, 1939 in Grand Rapids to Edward & Evelyn (McCarthy) Gillis. She graduated from Creston High School in 1958.
Cathy’s earliest job as a 50’s era carhop inspired her love of classic cars and she was recognized around town driving her beloved gold ’67 Camaro. She spent several years working at Wurzburg’s Department Store sharing her unique sense of fashion in clothing retail. Cathy is best remembered by the community as the face of Fat Boy Burgers during her 35 years of service. Many from Grand Rapids NE side will fondly remember being greeted by Cathy’s warm smile and friendly wit as she served up hot coffee and her famous chili.
She will be remembered for her devotion to her family; her thoughts were always with each of them though separated by great distance. Her fight against Parkinson’s was driven by her desire to witness the growth and accomplishments of the next generation. She will be dearly missed.
Cathy is survived by her son, Michael Ryzy (Melissa), granddaughters: Meghan Ryzy and Ashley (Brian) Fontana and great granddaughters: Olivia and Vivian. She is also survived by two younger siblings; her brother Victor Gillis (Susan) and nephew Brian and her sister Lynette Gillis (Allan) and children: Shannon Plaza (Darek) and Cameron Bailey: grandnephew Andrew and grandnieces Emilia and Isabella.
