

Eugene Francis Mezwicki, 87, of Grand Rapids passed away Tuesday April 20th at Heartland Green view HealthCare. He was born July 31st, 1922 in Grand Rapids and was the son of the late Frank and Rose (Centilli) Mezwicki. He was a 1940 graduate of Catholic Central High School. Eugene proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He was an army corporal for three years in 637th Tank Destroyer Division in the South Pacific, Luzon, and the Philippines’. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and the Presidential Accommodation from President Roosevelt. He was an active parishioner of St. Alphonous Catholic Church. He retired in 1985 from the United States Post Office after twenty five years of service. He loved his family dearly and had a great love for the Detroit Tigers, Notre Dame Football, working in his yard, and listening to polka music. He his survived by his children; Pat (Jim) Greenwood, Jim (Chris) Mezwicki, and Judy (Derek) Arnson; eight grandchildren, Amy (Joel) Totten, Tim Greenwood, Sarah and Andy Mezwicki, Kelsey, Katy, Joshua, and Benjamin Arnson; a sister Delores Franckowiak; sister-in-laws, Esther (Melvin) Quick, Marion Jamrog, Ginger Koryto, and Eleanor Deyoung; six stepchildren, Carol VanVelsen, Mary Anes, Thomas Gray, Wayne Gray, Marilyn Norman, and Beverly Barnard; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife of 47 years Dorothy (Jamrog) Mezwicki on June 27, 1993, and his second wife Hazel (Gould) Mezwicki on November 17th, 2008. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday April 24th at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church 2230 Lake Michigan Drive N.W. 49504 with Rev. John Vallier officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Kent County Honor Guard. Visitation will be Friday April 23rd from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at Reyers North Valley Chapel , 2815 Fuller Avenue N.E and Three Mile Road, with a scripture service at 8:30 p.m. and one hour prior to the mass at the church. Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital or to St. Alphonsus Catherine Clinic fund with envelopes provided at the funeral home.
