Jim was the beloved husband of his best friend, Nanette, and proud father of five children. He was a man of quiet strength, unwavering generosity, and a deep love for his family. Jim never missed a game for any of his children and could often be found crisscrossing the country to help them move, wherever life took them. Those who knew him will remember his warm smile, quick wit, and the way he made everyone feel welcome whether you were family, a friend, or a new acquaintance.
He took great pride in his home and especially his yard, which was a point of pride in the neighborhood. Jim enjoyed tending to the garden, watching (and feeding) the birds, and spending peaceful hours working outdoors. Saturdays in the fall were reserved for college football, especially University of Michigan. He appreciated having a wife that shared that passion. He and Nanette were also intrepid travelers, visiting all 50 states on countless road trips, creating a lifetime of memories along the way.
Jim was a proud graduate of Creston High School, Class of 1968. Over the years, he worked for DyDee Diaper Service, Ace Vending Service and Model Coverall Service, where he was known for his dedication and hard work. Jim’s work ethic and love for the outdoors were, in part, forged during his time with the Boy Scouts, where he earned the highest rank of Eagle Scout.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Jeanette Larson. He is survived by his wife, Nanette; his children, John “Jack” (fiancée Sarah), Lucas, and James, and Michael (fiancée Michele) and Ann, his children from his former wife, Diane Huebner; his sister, Carole Kaupa; and many extended family members and friends whose lives he touched.
Friends and family are welcome to attend visiting hours on Thursday, August 14, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Reyers North Valley Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave N.E., Grand Rapids, Michigan 49505. A funeral service will follow on Friday, August 15, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Reyers North Valley Chapel. The family will hold a private burial.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the National Park Foundation as a tribute to Jim’s lifelong love of travel and his joy of visiting national parks.
