Gary Michael Lester, 80, of Belton, MO passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at St Luke's Hospice House in Kansas City, MO. Born on June 30, 1943 in Kansas City, KS, he was the son of the late Harry R and Margaret Surprise Lester.
Gary attended Raytown High School and then studied mechanical engineering at Finlay Engineering College. He proudly served in the US Army during Vietnam from 1966-1969 before starting his career at Bendix/Allied Signal where he worked until his ‘first’ retirement. Anyone that knew Gary, understood that his passion was racing. He was an avid NASCAR and Indy Car fan and spent many weekend nights at the local dirt tracks spectating and even helping building stock cars with his friends. He even came out of retirement for a few years to work for Motorsport Marketing in sales which he absolutely loved. Over the years, Gary took on several project cars, completely rebuilding them. His favorite was his beloved 1992 Corvette which was featured several times on the High Tech Corvette website. Besides racing, Gary thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren taking them on trips to the zoo, building model cars, taking them to NASCAR races and hosting many memorable birthday, Christmas and Easter celebrations.
He is survived by his daughters Kristina Miller and Russ of Kansas City, MO and Kelly Lester and John Van Sittert of Independence, MO; 4 grandchildren, Anthony Mayer of St Louis, MO, Rebecca Mayer of Kansas City, MO, Kyle Fitzgerald of Maryville, MO and Luke Van Sittert of Independence, MO. He is also survived by his sister Diane Lester and Gary Bowlen of Raytown, MO and brother Tom Lester of Lee's Summit, MO and 2 nieces.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Priscilla Mae Campbell Lester and his brother, Phillip Lester.
Services will be held on Thursday, March 28th at McGilley & George Funeral Home in Grandview, MO. Visitation will start at 10am with a service at 11am with a reception immediately following the service. This will be followed by an Inurnment Service rendering military honors in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO at 2pm.
