Bernard A. Hutchins, better known simply as Ben, passed away peacefully September 18, 2025, at the age of 97. Ben was married to the love of his life, Kathryn “Katy” Hutchins, for 59 wonderful years before her passing in 2015. Together, they raised two children Gary (Michele) and Kathy; grandchildren Alexandria Hutchins (friend, Chris), Kendra Fraher (Cory), Benjamin Hutchins (Sarah); and two great-granddaughters Emerson and Brynn, who always brought a smile to his face.
Born and raised on a farm in North Muskegon, Ben was one of 11 children. He was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Signa Hutchins; brothers Warren (Ann), Donald, Willard, Harold (Evelyn), Roger, Kenneth, and Roy (Sharon); and several in-laws. He is survived by his sisters Beverly Larkin and Sarah Archer; brother, Wesley (Mollie); sisters-in-law Jordi Hutchins (Bill) and Regina Banaszak; along with many nieces and nephews who all knew Uncle Ben as someone steady, kind, and dependable.
Ben discovered his life’s trade early on while still in high school, tinkering with watches at a jewelry store in Montague. He went on to complete the Elgin Watchmakers School program—what was supposed to take two years, he mastered in just two months. After working at several shops across Michigan, Ben and Katy opened Hutchins Jewelry in 1965. That store became not just a business, but a second home—where friendships were built alongside jewelry repairs. Remarkably, Ben continued to work two days a week at the store right up until his passing. He cherished his loyal customers and friends—special thanks to Ruth for being such a help, even after retirement.
Beyond his work, Ben was proud to be a 32nd degree mason and a Shriner, supporting the organization that had once supported him. Giving back was always important to him.
In his later years, Ben lived at American House in Jenison, where he enjoyed a caring community. The family wishes to thank their staff, as well as Georgetown Senior Transportation, for making sure Ben could keep up with his work and appointments in recent years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ben’s honor to the Shriners, Grandville United Methodist Church, or Georgetown Seniors—organizations close to his heart.
Ben lived a long and full life defined by hard work, deep love for family, and genuine kindness toward everyone he met. He’ll be remembered most for his steady presence, his stories from behind the counter, and his joy in helping others.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, September 26, 2025 at Grandville United Methodist Church, 3140 Wilson Ave. SW, Grandville, MI 49418, with visitation from 9:30-11:30 a.m. prior. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresgrandville.com in Ben’s online guestbook.
