A beloved pastor in the Reformed Church of America, Chuck passed away on September 29, 2018 at the age of 81 in Douglas, Michigan. He was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on April 28, 1937 to Evert and Fredrika Doornbos. He graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School in 1955. He attended Hope College transferring and then graduating from Western Michigan University, earning a degree in Speech Pathology.
His first career was in Holland Public and Christian Schools, utilizing his knowledge to help the students there. He worked in the Speech Therapy field until 1964 when he completed his studies at Western Theological Seminary. This fulfilled his unique calling to become a pastor. He, along with Elsie his wife, served churches in Monroe, South Dakota; Newton, Iowa; Grandville, Michigan; Middleville, Michigan; Hudson, Florida; and Gary, Indiana. In 2000, he retired after serving his final church in Coopersville, Michigan. After entering retirement, his ministry continued. He helped serve his home church, Third Reformed in Kalamazoo. He also served as interim pastor at Moline Christian Reformed Church for two years. His ministry to those in these churches is cherished by many to this day. God used him to help many churches grow and parishioners there were blessed.
In the spring of 2011, Chuck suffered a stroke which, when coupled with the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, limited his abilities. Despite this, Pastor Chuck continued his ministry in the places he resided after his stroke. Those around him at Carveth Village, Woodlawn Meadows, and Grace of Douglas were blessed by his presence.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents Evert and Fredrika and his sister Jeanette Wallace.
Charles is survived by his children Charles Evert (Jackie) Doornbos of West Olive, Lisa (Dan) Heneveld of Zeeland, Ned Doornbos of Holland, and Anthony (Becki) Doornbos of Grand Rapids. He is also survived by Elsie Doornbos of Zeeland, Ray Doornbos of Kalamazoo, and sister Julia Krieger living in California. He leaves a legacy of faith and fun behind for his children, 11 grandchildren, and five great- grandchildren, as well as his many nieces and nephews.
