Dorothy, the daughter of Harold and Marilyn (Moan) Myers was born February 26, 1952 in Battle Creek, MI. She was a 1970 graduate of Hastings High School. She continued her education and earned her nursing degree at Kellogg Community College and Bachelor of Science at Western Michigan University. She proudly worked as a registered nurse and supervisor at Leila Hospital and visiting nurse in Calhoun County. She was later employed by Holland Home in the Grand Rapids area.
Dorothy enjoyed exploring the beaches and lighthouses of Michigan and cruises with her husband, David Houtstra. She loved tending to her flowers and always had more flowers than containers. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cooking, baking, and an occasional social outing trip to the casino. Dorothy had such enthusiasm collecting and selling her “treasures” at her antique booth in Battle Creek and always had more projects than she could complete. She especially enjoyed her very special times spent with her grandsons (and relied on them for help with her computer and phone).
She was married to the love of her life, David J. Houtstra, who sadly preceded her in death June 22, 2012.
Dorothy is survived by her children Laura (Darin) Rietman, Matthew (Wendy) Staup, and William Christopher Gill; grandchildren Noah Rietman, Cole Rietman, Daniel Staup, and Tarrin Staup; siblings Dolores (Jim) Garland (twin sister), Joyce (Steve) Stringer, Robert (Carolyn) Myers, James (Cindy) Myers (both deceased). She leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncle.
Dorothy attended Georgetown Bible Church, whether in person or livestream. Her visits (with lunch) from Pastor Gary were a monthly ritual and delight. Pastor Dick was always ready to listen and share prayer.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, January 16, 2026, at Georgetown Bible Church, 4114 Baldwin St., Hudsonville, MI 49426, with visitation prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be held at Blendon Cemetery, Blendon Township, MI immediately following luncheon. In honor of Dorothy, contributions may be made to Georgetown Bible Church. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresgrandville.com in their guestbook online.
