The Music Man took his final bow on August 18, 2015. Gregory Harold Hewitt was born in Big Rapids, raised in Holland, and settled in Grand Rapids until his God called him home at 66 years old. He, above all else, was a servant of his Lord, dedicating his magical tenor voice and natural born leadership to many area churches, including Sunshine Community, Immanuel Reformed, Hillside Community, Zeeland Community, and Hudsonville Reformed. He also served his God's children as a choir and drama educator of 38 years at Kentwood Public Schools. He touched thousands of lives through his compassion and selflessness. When asked what he was most proud of through a lifetime of achievement, he simply answered, "my children."
He is survived by them - Shaina, Brandon and Kenna; his grandchildren, Amelia, Caelan and Bronx; his wife, Lesa; and brother, Kenneth Dee. The curtain has closed, but the crowds are standing for one last encore.
A remembrance celebration will be held at Hudsonville Reformed Church on Saturday, August 22 at 2 p.m. The family will welcome visitors from 12:30-1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Greg's name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or Be the Match Bone Marrow Foundation at bethematchfoundation.org/goto/inmemoryofgreg.
