The Angels gathered near your bed, so very close to you. For they knew the pain and suffering that you were going through. I thought about so many things, as I held tightly to your hand. Oh, how I wished that you were strong and happy once again. But your eyes were looking homeward,   to that place beyond the sky. Where Jesus held His outstretched arms,   it was time to say goodbye. I struggled with my selfish thoughts, for I wanted you to stay. So we could walk and talk again, like we did - just yesterday. But Jesus knew the answer, and I knew He loved you so. So I gave to you life’s greatest gift, the gift of letting go.

From our family to yours we send our deepest sympathy. We will never forget the good times on the farm in Lancaster. They are wonderful memories for a lifetime. Now Janet is in heaven with her husband. My mother is with them. I am sure they will look down upon all of us and smile from a better place.

Nanny had a tough run of it in recent years, but my lasting memory of my grandmother will always be of her sitting in her chair in her Florida apartment and holding court, surrounded by several generations of family. I will remember her sharp intellect and love of books. It would be fair to say that my current obsession with non-fiction is her fault as she always had a good title to recommend. I will remember her sense of humor and especially the laugh that she reserved for a particularly good off-color joke. Mostly I think I will remember the love she had for all her grandchildren and the way her eyes always lit up when she saw us. She will be missed.

We have so many wonderful memories of times we spent with Jan and Al. Jan always treated us with love and kindness. Eggie was the "little brother" and they both took us under their wings. We will miss them. All of our nieces and nephews are in our thoughts and prayers.

I've spent time with my mother-in-law in many places...in her home in Kalamazoo, at MSU, in our homes in Kalamazoo, Holland, and Grandville, at our cottage in Charlevoix, in her flat in London, her condo in Florida, even once on a cruise ship in Italy and the Greek Islands! I remember her as a great conversationalist who had a deep love for her family, and a hearty laugh. (It has been too long since we've heard that!) One of my clearest memories dating back many years, is that she would always say that when she was gone, she didn't want people to be sad, she wanted them to have a party! The following poem strikes me as expressing what she say now. 
 "I'm Free"
 Don't grieve for me for now I'm free I'm following the path God laid for me. I took His hand when I heard Him call. I turned my back and left it all.
 I could not stay another day. To laugh, to love, to work or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I found that peace at the close of the day.
 If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah yes, these things I too will miss.
 But be not burdened with times of sorrow, For I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full. I've savored much, Good friends, good times and loved ones' touch.
 Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your ears and share with me. God wanted me now. He set me free!
