
He worked at Oven Fresh Bakery in Grand Rapids for 30 years after returning from service in WWII.
His first wife, Winnie preceded him in death in 1978 and his second wife, Viola preceded him in death in 1983. Three sisters and a brother also preceded him in death.
John is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Barbara Roger Spencer of Petoskey, MI and Margaret “Peg” Jim DeHaan of Mears, MI; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his brother Sidney Maxine Vander Werf; his sister Jessie VandeWege; and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of John’s Home Going will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 1 from the Cook Memorial Chapel east building 4235 Prairie St. SW in Grandville, with Pastor Roger Spencer officiating.
Interment at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
The family will meet with relatives and friends on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cook Funeral Home west building in Grandville. Visiting will also be held one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Oden Community Church where John was a beloved member.
