I have wonderful memories of John volunteering at Best Buddies Preschool at Godfrey-Lee Public Schools. He had so much energy and patience for the children. I can still picture John sliding down the dinosaur slide with the kids. The morning students would go home, the teachers would go to lunch and relax while John would go to work out. Then, he would come back to volunteer again with the afternoon students. Thank you for all that you did for our preschoolers.

We were very sad to hear about John's passing. He was always fun to be with and great to work with.
 John was instrumental in leading Plante Moran's West MI region and built a wonderful foundation that has allowed all of us here to be successful.
 He showed he cared by investing in peoples lives and was instrumental in helping shape many careers here at Plante Moran. He always had a smile and passed out high '5's' to anyone he met. He was an amazing business man who was passionate about serving the clients he managed. There was no one better!
 We will miss him and to the entire Zuiderveen family, you have our deepest sympathy. May God comfort you during this difficult time.

My deepest sympathies to Kathy and the entire Zuiderveen family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. The world lost a truly great guy. John was a true professional, an advocate for the underdog, always upbeat, and one of the best story tellers ever- he had me in tears from laughter more times than I can remember!!! He had a sense of when someone was down and was always there to pick them up. John taught me valuable lessons about both work and life. Rest in peace my friend.

I knew John from the Bristol Leisenring days. I actually had the pleasure of working with him in the late 80's when he moved to the Kalamazoo office , before starting the Grand Rapids office. John had a great way of connecting with people and he was genuine. We spent a lot of time talking about our kids and the struggles our boys were going through being ADHD. John always gave 110% to anything he did. After moving to Grand Rapids I only got to see him when we had our P&M golf outings. Anybody that met him took an instant liking to John because he truly was a genuine caring person. It was very sad to hear of his passing.

 I was very sad to hear of John's passing. You have my deepest sympathies and are in my thoughts and prayers. 
 John was a great guy. He had a wonderful perspective on life and could always make me smile and laugh. When I first met John I thought he was this tough guy. I got to see his softer side and his compassion for those less fortunate when working with various charitable organizations. John had a heart of gold. He took a sincere interest in the plight of others. 
 John will be genuinely missed by many. May he rest in peace.

Only John could convince a 20 year old college student (when going into my next interview session) to ask Jon Chism if he were related to the guy I interviewed with before him a�" ask if perhaps Jon Chism was his (JZ's) father. Well luckily, it didn't hurt my interview and a few weeks later I graciously accepted a job offer from John while in the shower a�" on the phone with him of course! But I remember him loving telling the story that I accepted my job offer in the shower.
 Anyway, I have always known that without John seeing something in me as a college student, I probably would not be where I am today and I owe him that. For as much as John touched my life, I know he touched each of yours in a similar great way.

Kathy and Family, It is always difficult to say the right things at times like this. To say John is in a better place, is without pain, and is happy in heaven (although all is true), does not lesson the pain and sorrow of his loss. John was a special person and a dear friend to many, including me, and he will be dearly missed by all that knew him!

I have wonderful memories of my years working with John at Plante & Moran. As a young professional cutting my teeth, I was very fortunate that John was the Partner on the majority of the engagements I was assigned. What an awesome mentor and friend to me and so many others!!
 Although he helped develop my audit skills, he went way beyond that, he taught me what it meant to work on a client's business instead of just working in it! Most of all he taught me what a "day's work" meant and how to do it with passion, enthusiasm, integrity and compassion. 
 I'm sure he is passing out high fives in heaven!
