Jordan Tyler Vanderstel, age 35 of Hudsonville, Michigan, went home into the loving arms of Jesus on Tuesday, April 15, surrounded by his family, after a courageous lifelong journey with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He was preceded in death by his grandpa, Harold Dekkenga, and his grandparents Gordon and Marilyn Vanderstel. He is survived by his parents, Jodi and Jim Tanis and Gerald Vanderstel; sister, Caitlin; brother, Jacob; grandmother, Joy Dekkenga; stepbrothers Joshua (Anna), Jordan (Jenn), Tyler (Michelle), and their children; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his two dogs Angel and Teddy.
Jordan touched so many and was a testimony to all who knew him. He loved the Lord with all his heart and openly shared his faith without fear. His sense of humor and quick wit was one of a kind, and he always knew how to make you laugh. His tremendous willpower and determination allowed him to live remarkably long, despite the many challenges he faced. His hunger for knowledge and learning things about the world came naturally to him as he was always asking questions, and he had a joyful passion for life and love for people.
Jordan graduated from Hudsonville High School in 2009 and truly enjoyed all the social connections and friendships he made; he always knew how to make people smile.
He loved sports; in particular, he loved NHL Hockey, his favorite teams being the Seattle Kraken and Edmonton Oilers. He also enjoyed playing his Xbox with his brother and dad and would get quite competitive at times. He also enjoyed cuddling with his dogs Angel and Teddy. Jordan always had a deep appreciation for making connections with people and thought of others before himself.
The family extends a special thank you to all of Jordan’s nurses and caregivers who cared for Jordan with selfless love and compassion.
