VER STRATE - Miriam Johnson Ver Strate, a woman of uncommon Spirit, is walking whole and healthy in the Light today following her illness. Her family and many beloved friends will remember 'The Maven' for her legacy of music, humor, wit and kindness. In their sixteen years of marriage Miriam and her husband Wayne A. Ver Strate provided a wonderful model of loving partnership for their children, Rick and Tricia Ver Strate, Michelle Ver Strate, their dear friend Liz Urso, and grandchildren, Sarah, Shelby and Garrett Ver Strate.Miriam was the precious first-born daughter of William A. and Genevieve Johnson, and the much-loved sister of Rev. Bill Judy Johnson, Debbie Brian McFalone, and Karey Johnson. She was the object of devotion and love from her aunts, uncles, and cousins, who supported and rejoiced in her accomplishments throughout her life. Miriam's generosity and interest in her fourteen nephews and nieces was a guiding force in their lives which will carry forward. Miriam's ability to embody the spirit of love was truly a gift, and this spirit was shown in her close relationships with her husband's family: Mrs. Marie Ver Strate, Walt and Carol Ver Strate, Marcia Van Harmelen, Peach and Chris Siebers and their children.Miriam's energy, musical talent and intellect were evident in her teaching activities in Wyoming Public Schools. She was a proud public school educator for thirty years, retiring last June. Her students experienced life-changing moments in their musical performances and her classroom, and she touched their hearts. Miriam's many, many dear friends were an unfailing source of support for her, and Wayne and the family express heart-felt gratitude for their kindness and comfort. We were in awe of the outstanding support and care from two wonderful physicians, Dr. Jan Talmo and Dr. Enrico Sobong, both of whom embody the ideal compassion and commitment every family wishes for. We also wish to thank Hospice of Holland Home, whose staff made Miriam's final days comfortable and who enabled the family to understand and participate in her journey.A celebration of Mriam's life will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Wyoming Park United Methodist Church with her brother Rev. Bill Johnson officiating. Visitation with the family will occur 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Cook Funeral Home west building, 4235 Prairie St. SW. Interment Grandville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wyoming Park United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2244 Porter SW, Wyoming, MI 49509.
