Born in Holton, Michigan, he was one of five children, and spent his childhood enjoying the outdoors, often hunting and fishing with his brothers. Neal studied at Michigan State University prior to starting his lifelong career as a railroad engineer. Around this time, he met the love of his life, Geraldyne. He quickly knew she was the one, and in 1959 they were married at Holton Methodist Church, beginning a devoted partnership of 66 years.
Despite long days away on the railroad, Neal made a constant effort to create a loving home where his children could make lasting memories. The pool he installed in the backyard became a gathering place for not only his children and grandchildren, but also cousins and neighborhood friends who he made feel like family. He could often be found sitting under the large Crimson King Maple tree in the backyard, coffee in hand, scoring his grandchildren’s dives. He was also a proud supporter at endless hockey, baseball, and volleyball tournaments.
Neal took great pride in tending to a wide variety of flowers and plants in his gardens, giving detailed updates to anyone who visited about the latest additions. He was always known for his quick wit and sense of humor, which brought warmth and levity to those around him. Above all, he will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to family, a legacy that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
Neal is survived by his wife, Geraldyne Blakkan; children Sheila (Mark) Barringer, Monica (Mark) Maier, Carla Blakkan; grandchildren Jessica (Nate) Smith, Patrick (Jessie) Barringer, Jake (Emily) Maier, Emma (Paul) Ramos, Joe (Anna) Maier; great-grandchildren Molly, Jackson, Lainey, Eliza, Baker; sisters-in-law Joanne Blakkan, Kathie Blakkan; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
