Richard “Dick” George Meitz, 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 25, 2025, to be with his Lord and Savior. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shurlie, and his parents, George and Erika Meitz. Dick will be remembered by his children: Rick (Dawn), Ron, Bob, Jim (Denise), and Karen; his brother, Don (Diane); along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
After graduating from WMU with a finance degree, he began his career at Standard Oil and met his wife Shurlie. Together they started a family and soon his career transitioned to General Motors in Flint, MI. Later, the family business called and they moved back to Grand Rapids for positions at Miller Metal and finally Wolverine World Wide, where he retired.
His dedication to his faith and desire to serve the Lord led them to be founding members at Oakhill Church where he was an Elder. Later, at Bella Vista church they were involved with Steven’s Ministry and after moving to Hudsonville, post retirement, he was a greeter at Resurrection Life Church. That dedication was also evident his unfailing love and care for his wife as she battled Alzheimer’s for many years. Outside of being a great husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother, Dick found his joy in gardening and working outside. He was noted in the neighborhood for his huge garden and was always handing out his bounty. They both had a love for travel and were able to visit the Caribbean and Florida many times before Shurlie became ill.
A memorial celebration of Dick’s life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2025 at Oakhill Church, 1930 Leonard St. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505, with visitation from 10-11 a.m. prior to service. There will be a luncheon to follow. In honor of Dick and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or your local Christian ministries. The family welcomes memories and messages www.cookcaresgrandville.com in their guestbook online.
