Rita Lynn Bailey, age 79 of Grand Rapids, was called home to heaven on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, with family by her side. Rita was born as Henrietta Waukazoo, on March 26, 1941 to Clarence Bailey and Viola Waukazoo in Peshawbestown, Michigan. She relocated to Grand Rapids in 1966 for better work opportunities and to raise her family. She worked as a welder for Evans Tempcon Inc. for over 30 years. She enjoyed baking and cooking for anyone, whether it was for family, neighbors, or even a stranger. She loved listening to country music, especially Johnny Cash while having a “few” beers. She also loved to garden and sew. Her grandchildren could always count on her to make their yearly Halloween costumes. She was very proud of her Native American heritage, belonging to the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. She had a strong catholic faith her entire life, even after dementia took a lot away, her heritage and faith remained a constant.
She will be deeply missed by her children Deanna (Joe) Januszka and Daniel (Julie) Bailey; grandchildren André Torres, Taiya Jones, and Keyhna Jones; great-grandchild, Arianna Watts. She will be missed by her siblings Peggy (Dave) Schmidt, Sandra Waukazoo, Bill Burgess, and Ron Waukazoo; many nieces and nephews; many friends; and daughter-in-law, Sabina Falk. She was preceded in death by her siblings Judy McSawby, Dori Burgess, John Burgess; nephew, Rick McSawby.
Following her wishes, a traditional native celebration of life will be in Peshawbestown. This will be held at a later date due to the pandemic. The family welcomes memories and messages in their guest book online at www.cookcaresgrandville.com.
