

Robert W Schellenberg Sr., age 89, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, September 24, 2011. He is survived by his wife Leona (Buikema) and his five children, Thomas (Joan Young), Nancy (Donald Brightman) Schellenberg, Robert Jr. (Kathleen), Carol (Mike) Chase, and Ruth (Mike) Sprague, 15 grandchildren, brothers Charles and Herman (Cheryl) Schellenberg, brother-in-law Milo (Dorothy) Buikema, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Robert was a graduate of Lee High School, Grand Rapids Junior College, and the University of Michigan. He had a distinguished career as a Certified Public Accountant, practicing as a partner in several local firms. A World War II veteran, Robert served in the Navy on the Pacific fleet's flagship, and was part of the team that broke the Japanese code. He also piloted landing craft during several invasions. Robert was active in the community as a Godfrey - Lee School board member, Kent County commissioner, member of the Kent County Aeronautics Board, and served on the Hope College Board of Trustees. He was a founding member of the Grand Rapids Economic Club and original South YMCA. Robert was a lifelong, active member of Eighth Reformed Church, and served as a youth group leader, deacon and elder. Bob was a generous, caring person who was always fully involved in family, friends, community, church, and school. After his retirement, Bob and Leona traveled the world and wintered in Florida. An active Rotary member, Bob exchanged Rotary flags with clubs in Hong Kong, Bangkok, Cairo, and Jerusalem. He was an avid golfer and diehard U of M football fan.
The funeral service will be held at 11 AM Tuesday at Eighth Reformed Church, 841 SW Burton Street, Wyoming, MI with Pastor Robert Langenberg officiating. Interment will be at Grandville Cemetery. The family will meet with relatives and friends from 3 to 5 Sunday, September 25 and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM Monday at Cook Funeral Home in Grandville, 4235 Prairie St. SW (west building).
