At the age of 68, Roderick “Rod” Harold Clarey died peacefully March 10, 2023, with his wife, Denise, at his side, in Wyoming, MI. Rod is survived by his devoted wife, Denise; daughter, Gretchen; stepchildren Andrea Goosen (Gary), Jonathon DeVries (Kayleen); siblings Mary Bertuleit, Peg Grebinec, Dorcee, Bart, and Pat; stepsisters Denise Williamson, Debbie Greanya, Lori Pickleman, and their spouses; grandchildren Elijah, Isaac, Evelyn, Trenten, and Elsie; as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brothers Paul and Tim; father, Russ and Lorraine (stepmother); and mother, Lois and Steve Gordon (stepfather).
Rod was born August 14, 1954 in Bay City, Michigan to Russ and Lois. He grew up on a small farm in Gladwin, MI with his seven siblings. He graduated from Gladwin High School in 1972. Rod eventually moved to Grand Rapids, MI. In Grand Rapids, he worked at the Jenison Post Office for 14 years and at Meijer for 31 years. While working at Meijer, he met the love of his life, Denise, and they married in 2004. Rod loved collecting antique toys, striking up conversations with strangers (genuinely wanting to know their stories), rooting for his beloved Yankees, and driving everyone crazy with his jokes. Most of all, he loved visiting with his family and friends. He will be remembered for his bright outlook on life, despite the many physical challenges he faced.
All are invited to attend and celebrate Rod’s life 3 p.m. Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Cook Memorial Chapel (East building), 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, MI 49418, with visitation from 2-2:45 p.m. prior to service. The family would like to thank Faith Hospice and Elders Helpers for their care during his last days. The family welcomes memories and messages in their guest book online at www.cookcaresgrandville.com.
