

Ruth was born January 18, 1918 in Hesperia, MI. She was the daughter of the late Estelle and John Mahan. She was a 1935 graduate of Hesperia High School and attended Central Michigan Teachers College and Eastern Michigan Teachers College where she received her BS degree. On October 9, 1938, she married Robert M. Curtis in Hesperia. Sadly, he preceded her in death
on August 10, 2010. Ruth worked as a first grade teacher at Lincoln and Christian schools in Monroe. Ruth was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where she served on numerous boards. She was an honorary member of the Women’s Society, a member of the Thursday Prayer Group, taught Sunday School and was Director of Religious Education. Other
memberships included: Monroe Teachers Club, Michigan Association of Retired Teachers, American Association of University Women, The Monroe Thrift Shop, Golf Crest Garden Club, volunteered for Mobile Meals and was a Campfire and 4-H Club leader. After retiring in 1976, she and her husband Bob enjoyed spending their winters in Florida. They had 71 wonderful years together.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Christine (Bob) Smith; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and one sister-in-law. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by their son, Robert; daughter, Carole; grandson, Douglas; her parents, siblings, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm on Friday, September 27, 2019 in the Chapel at Sunset Manor, 725 Baldwin St., Jenison, MI. Refreshments will be served in the Town Square Room at Sunset Manor after the service.
