She was preceded in death by her husband, Tienus Hessels.
Sarah is survived by her children, Trudy and Ken Vander Molen of Grandville, Sarita and John Holzmann of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and D. Scott Hessels of Kennedy Town, Hong Kong; and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Sarah and Tienus emigrated to the United States with their daughter, Trudy, after surviving World War II in The Netherlands. Her independent nature, and her strength served her well through life as she acclimated to the culture of West Michigan. She had a strong memory, lived alone, and drove until she was 96 years old. Sarah was a voracious reader and enjoyed knitting and sewing.
A graveside funeral was held Tuesday, July 11, at Grandville Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Art Schoonveld, their longtime friend and pastor from Ivanrest Christian Reformed Church.
