

Shirley was born May 1, 1928 in Denver, Colorado to Guy and Sis (VanSchooneveld) Wright. She graduated from South High School in Denver and attended Denver Business College. She worked most of her adult life as an administrative assistant and payroll supervisor. She retired from Goodrich Division of Conrac in 1991. Shirley was married to William VanderVliet in Denver on December 5, 1947. They moved to South Holland, Illinois in 1949 and to Hudsonville, Michigan in 1963. Bill passed in May of 2000. Shirley had been a resident of Sheldon Meadows since 2012. Shirley's hobbies included needle work, gardening, traveling and spending time with her family. She was an avid Chicago Cubs' fan and was always eager to talk baseball with her family and friends. Shirley was a long-time member of Hillcrest Church. Her faith in God never wavered. She was a wonderful Christian wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In spite of her declining health, Shirley remained a positive and encouraging person who openly shared her love for Jesus Christ, her Savior.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill, brother Raymond Wright, sister Marjorie VandenBurg, in-laws Richard VandenBurg, James Jeltema, and Harry VanderVliet, and grandson Thomas VanWyk.
Family left to cherish her memories are children Vonna and David VanWyk of Hudsonville, Dr. William and Rita VanderVliet of Holland, and Bradley and Darleen VanderVliet of Midland; grandchildren Jeff VanWyk, Julie (Chad) Bonter, Jane (Jason) Zomerlei, Joel (Kelly) VanderVliet, Bethany (Colin) Mulder, Rebecca (Brad) Kuipers, Nick (Jessa) VanderVliet, Jon (Jamie) VanderVliet; 13 great grandchildren; sister Lorraine Jeltema of Denver; sister-in-law Eloise VanderVliet of Dyer, Indiana, and brother-in-law Nelson and Betty VanderVliet of Arvada, Colorado.
A service to honor her life will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, December 5, at the Cook Memorial Chapel (East Building, 4235 Prairie St., S.W., Grandville, Michigan. A time of visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 - 11:30 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be at Georgetown Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Shirley's memory to Hudsonville Christian Schools. The family welcomes memories and messages in their online guest book at www.cookcares.com.
