

Stanley (Stan) Van Dokkumburg, age 94, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, February 4, 2025. He was born March 19, 1930 to Sytze and Jessie Van Dokkumburg in Sioux Center, Iowa. He attended high school at Sioux Center Public Schools, receiving numerous awards for his singing abilities, and went on to attend Calvin College. During his time at Calvin, Stan met the love of his life, Marilyn (Mary) VandeRiet. They married in 1956 and had 65 wonderful years together. They raised four beautiful children together in Jenison, Michigan. He enjoyed taking his children to the Detroit Tigers, Harlem Globetrotters, and Michigan State football games. Summers were spent camping at Timber Shores in Traverse City and Holland State Park.
Stan proudly served his country in the Korean War. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars. Upon discharge, he enrolled at Calvin College, graduating in 1955. His employment included: Lear Siegler, Inc., Brunswick Corp., and Yamaha Corp. of America in the Music Division. This is a job which he thoroughly enjoyed and retired from in 1995. During his retirement years, Stan loved reading nonfiction books, playing golf, listening to classical music, traveling with Mary, and spending quality time with his family. Stan had a great sense of humor. He will be missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing him.
Stan was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mary (VandeRiet) Van Dokkumburg; parents Sytze and Jessie Van Dokkumburg; mother- and father-in-law Jack and Jeanette VandeRiet; sisters Wilma Mulder, Edith Nikkel, Ida Bush, Jess Kooistra, and their spouses; sister-in-law, Evelyn (Oosterbaan) Young and spouse; and son-in-law, Randy Hylarides. He is survived by his children Lisa (Alex) Costa, Diana (Rick) LaRocque, Debra (Jim) Zlydaszyk, and Jim (Carla) Van Dokkumburg; nine grandchildren Mike (Kimberlee), Dan (Magdalena), and Aubrey Johnson, Christian (Sarah) and Chase Moreno, Ally, Sam, and Ben (Ky) Zlydaszyk, and Jameson and Elena Van Dokkumburg; four great-grandchildren Bryson Johnson, Giselle, Jade, and Jagger Conley; brother, Webb (Ruth Mary) Van Dokkumburg; and sister-in-law, Arlene (Chuck) Zandstra.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2025 at Cook Memorial Chapel, 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, Michigan. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at Ridgewood CRC, 1571 Baldwin St., Jenison, Michigan, with visitation from 10-11 a.m. prior to service. Pastor Michael Ten Haken will be officiating. A private burial for the family will follow at Georgetown Cemetery.
