Susan Marie Dixon (née Kostin), age 71 of Grand Rapids, Michigan, passed away on February 2, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of laughter, love, strong opinions, and stories that will be retold over a good whiskey.
Susan was born at the Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois, grew up in Virginia, and moved to Grand Rapids while still in elementary school. Once she arrived, she made it clear she wasn’t going anywhere—Grand Rapids became home, and Susan made sure it felt that way for everyone around her.
She retired from the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans as a certified dietary manager, a role that perfectly suited her nurturing spirit and adventurous palate. Susan believed food was love, seasoning was never optional, and recipes were really just suggestions. She adored experimenting in the kitchen, feeding people well, and making sure no one ever left her table hungry—or without a to-go container.
Susan loved her family fiercely and raised her children with laughter, spirit, and a deep sense of purpose. She taught them to work hard, care deeply, and find humor even on the tough days—especially on the tough days. Time spent with her kids, friends, and loved ones filled her cup, and if travel was involved, it would be even better. Susan made lifelong friends with Suz, Dinah, and Roxy.
She had a special place in her heart for all animals, particularly senior cats. Susan believed older pets deserved extra patience, extra comfort, and maybe an extra treat or two—beliefs she applied quite generously to people as well.
Susan is lovingly remembered by her son, Daniel A. Dixon (Paula); daughter, Stacey M. Sheerin (Tim); stepson, Christopher L. Dixon; daughter-in-law, Joann Dixon; granddaughter, Elizabeth Dixon (fiancé, Scott Kaminski); granddaughter, Abbie Dixon; step-grandson, Aaron DeZwaan; and brother, Michael C. Kostin.
She was preceded in death by her parents Elmer Kostin and Julia M. (McCann) Kostin; beloved husband, Mark E. Dixon III; sister, Maryann Regan (Kostin); mother-in-law, Letha Batenburg (Parish); and stepson, Mark E. Dixon IV.
Susan loved seeing flowers bloom and was always a little sad to see them cut short. In her honor, the family asks that you consider a donation in her name to the Humane Society of West Michigan—because Susan would much rather help a furry friend than receive a bouquet.
Susan lived a life full of heart, humor, curiosity, and kindness. She laughed loudly, loved deeply, fed people generously, and left the world warmer than she found it. If there’s a kitchen in Heaven, Susan is already there, adjusting the recipe and telling everyone exactly what it needs.
The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresgrandville.com in their guestbook online.
