Gene was born in Weed, California in 1947. He was raised in a remote area not far from Weed and spent many, many hours using modeling clay to make playthings. He also enjoyed the outdoors catching frogs, setting traps and pretending to be a mountain man.
Lacking other children to play with, he fashioned animals, birds, and fish that he was familiar with. It was that early experience with clay that contributed to his talent.
Gene enlisted in the Navy and served during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged.
His life left a twisting trail that led him to many places and many occupations, but the most important part is that it wound up in Alaska where Gene was introduced to Alaskan Art. After being encouraged by friends to market the artwork that he still did as a hobby, the artist soon found a demand for his work that led him to pursue a career as a full time artist. Gene worked in wood, alabaster and soapstone along with watercolor paintings. His artwork was a reflection of his concept of his living experience, most which relate to the Arctic and Pacific Northwest. Each sculpture he created was meant to impart a mood or feeling that can be enjoyed by all.
He was a recovered alcoholic for at least 41 years and also supported other recovering alcoholics.
Gene was a good father and loved all kids. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed animals; especially dogs.
He is survived by his son Paris Drake and nephews Daniel and Vern Klicker and his loving girlfriend, Sally Mason.
