Donald Royal Adolph was born on June 23, 1934, in the ranching town of Roundup, Montana - a popular destination in earlier times for cattlemen to "round up" their herds along the Musselshell River. His life was a remarkable journey. He was the eighth of nine children born to John and Martha Adolph. Don exuded a unique energy that combined charm, humor, and resilience with a touch of mischief. These were the survival skills he holstered to navigate a childhood as the youngest of five boisterous and competitive brothers. Since those early times, these qualities wove their colors deeply into the fabric of his life.
Following high school graduation, Don enlisted with the USAF and trained as an aerial bomber crew member at Fairchild Air Force Base near Spokane, Washington. He married Jacqueline Jacques, his high school sweetheart in 1954 and together they raised three children: Steven, Cindy and Sheri. Don is known as Papa to his four grandchildren. He is a legend to his five great grandchildren.
While there is both pain and beauty in the world, Don’s laugh – his boot-scooting dancing, his loud and unabashed renderings of Hank Williams and Tennessee Ernie Ford’s “Sixteen Tons”. Oh! And that perpetual grin of mischief! These things filled all of us with the incredible joy he felt for life. Don passed peacefully on April 25. That same smile graced his face – hinting at the happy trails awaiting him on the Other Side. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline (2000), his son, Steve (2016), seven of his siblings, and his partner, Anne. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Trygg, daughters Cindy Stanley and Sheri Robinson (Dan), daughter-in-law, Renee Adolph Slaymaker (David), four grandchildren: Julie Oster, Jason Adolph (Andrea), Kylie Robinson, and Austin Robinson and five great grandchildren: Jaclyn, Hunter, Cooper, Keaton and Camden.
Long live the joyful life that came through and onto all of us through Don. This is how we know that legacy isn’t confined to living. That we may always honor him by sharing his stories, embodying his virtues, and weaving his wisdom into the narratives of our own lives – our actions, our choices, and the way we love.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Arizona.
