One Sunday, July 18, 2021, Joe Elson Herr, Jr. passed away at the age of 64.
Joe was born on January 18, 1957 in Harlingen, Tx, to Joe Elson Herr, Sr. and Joyce Carpenter Herr. In 1981, he graduated from West Point Military Academy in New York with a Russian Language degree. He proudly served his country as a Captain in the United States Army. Later, Joe married the love of his life, Ruth Nelson, and remained happily so until his death.
Joe was a long-time employee of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway. Both he and Ruth shared a passion for software development. Joe and Ruth also shared in the joy of being pet owners, providing a loving home for many dogs over the years. Joe loved animals and never missed a chance to save any of nature’s creatures. He had a real passion for life, and was taken away much too soon. Joe was a wonderful, caring person and was always willing to share his knowledge and assist his co-workers from whom he had a great deal of respect and cared for very much. He will be sorely missed by his friends and family.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, Joe Elson Herr, Sr. He is survived by his wife Ruth Nelson of Grapevine, his mother, Joyce Carpenter Herr, of Livingston, brothers, Jim Herr of Fort Worth and Ben Herr of Dallas, and sisters Susan Thomas of Austin and Holly Herr of Fort Worth, and his step-mother, Sylvia Herr of Irving, as well as several cousins and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a future date at DFW National Cemetery. Donations may be made in Joe’s honor to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or to your local humane society.
Herr's Service is going to be at DFW National Cemetery. We are going to be in lane 3
