Sonya Scarbrough, a long time resident of Geneva, Alabama, died Wednesday evening May 20th at her home in Parkwood Retirement Community, Bedford, Texas.
Born in 1946 in Bushnell, Florida, Sonya received her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education from Troy University. She taught public education for over 30 years at Geneva Middle School in Alabama, where she retired in 2005.
Sonya loved her daughters, delighted in taking care of animals & enjoyed feeding hummingbirds. Her favorite pastimes were drinking unsweet tea, watching football and listening to country music. Willie Nelson singing gospel hymns was her all-time favorite record.
She is survived by her daughters (Ashley Shy Crook of Georgia & Leslie Scarbrough Bartel of Texas), her son-in-law (Eric Bartel of Texas), and her grandchildren in Texas (Annabelle Grace Bartel, Sean Ryan Bartel, and another grandson due in November). She spent her final 9 months in Texas, and frequently said her greatest joy in life was spending time with her grandkids.
