

Arthur Chankin, violinist, oboist and English horn soloist, played for many years with the Philharmonic Symphony of Westchester in Mt. Vernon, the Yonkers Philharmonic, the Westchester Pops Band, and numerous other bands and orchestras. He studied the violin with Nicoline Zederer Mix and oboe and English horn with Englebert F.J. Brenner, former English horn soloist with the New York Philharmonic. Mr. Chankin taught instrumental music in the Bronx, first at J.H.S. 123 and later at Theodore Roosevelt High School. Additionally, he taught music for 40 years at Baruch College where he was also the bandleader, conducting the band at the college’s graduations at Madison Square Garden.
He gave private oboe lessons, including to one pupil who went on to study oboe at the Juilliard School and the Boston Conservatory at Berklee.
Just before retiring from teaching high school, he worked at a print factory as a machinist and troubleshooter.
After retiring, he worked part time making flute parts on his metal lathe and also made silver jewelry.
He lived in Yonkers and later in Hartsdale. He is survived by his wife Margot, his daughters Fay Hornik and Suzanne Gordon, his grandchildren Beth, Jonathan and Itamar Hornik, Rebecca and Nola Gordon, and his great-grandson Itai Hornik.
