Arthur was born on February 28, 1917. His father, Morris, and mother, Yetta, were from Poland and Hungry respectively. However, he never knew his mother, who died in the 1918 flu pandemic. He had two brothers, Ralph and Jerry, and a sister, Maxine, all of whom died years ago.
He was a decorated officer in World War II who saw heavy combat in the Pacific and was awarded the Bronze star and Purple Heart. As a forward artillery observer, he had one of the most dangerous jobs in the Army, but he did not reveal his army combat situation until the late 1970s.
Arthur was slated to be in the invasion of Japan and landed in Japan two weeks after the war’s end. He, like many others, potentially had his life saved by the atom bomb.
He was married to his beloved Lilyan for 45 years. Lilyan passed away in 1986.
After the war, Arthur became a salesman of textiles in the New York City garment center until he retired at the age of 78. He then became a volunteer at North Shore University Hospital for 25 years and holds the record for volunteer hours. He only stopped when Covid caused the volunteers to stop temporarily. He was 103 at the time and was still living by himself and driving.
Arthur is survived by his daughter, Jane Krakauer, of Great Neck, New York, and Dr. Steven Seidman of Charleston, South Carolina. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Kim Krakauer, Kyle Krakauer, and Margot Seidman-Carter, and one great-grandson, Layne Carter.
Arthur was a remarkable man who always put others before himself with love.
