EPSTEIN--Benjamin. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2013. Born in Brooklyn on April 24, 1921, he was the last known survivor of the SS Dorchester. This ship, which was torpedoed by a German submarine on February 3, 1943, is known for the heroic acts of the four chaplains who gave their life vests to soldiers being transported to Greenland. Benjamin gave numerous speeches to children at schools, sailors on submarines, church and temple groups and American Legion gatherings emphasizing ecumenical relationships among people of all cultures. He is survived by his wife Miriam of 66 years, children Paul and Trisha Epstein, Ralph Epstein and Mary George, grandchildren Joshua Epstein and Scott and Sara Epstein.
