On behalf of LD Resources Foundation, I am extremely saddened to share the news that Ann Nitzburg passed away on October 22, 2014.  I worked with Ann at the Churchill School to develop assistive technology training as part of the transitional program for 12th grade students developed by myself and Shannon Stringer.  Ann was very enthusiastic about the program, and shared her excitement about new assistive technology with students and faculty at Churchill.  She was integral to introducing concepts to the students to teach them how to use the technology, and she supported the students when they applied to receive LDRF's free technology awards. The students have been able to use those tools once they enter college to help them with note-taking, writing papers, and studying for exams. Ann never missed a planning meeting or presentation to help develop the program, even after she had retired.
 
During our first year of introducing the program to the school, I mentioned to Ann that I noticed that students were resistant to using assistive technology because of self-stigma.  Ann came up with a great idea to create a presentation for them about the development of assistive technology, and how it actually helps people with and without learning disabilities. That inspired me to develop my presentation “Introduction to 21st century assistive technology”. The students and Ann loved it, and it helped to change their attitude toward using assistive technology.

A couple of years ago, Ann told me the story about how a policeman saved her life when he stopped her car while she was driving.  She said the policemen first thought she might be driving under the influence of alcohol. But he quickly realized otherwise, and told her that he wanted her to go to the hospital right away because he thought she might have a medical emergency.  He arranged to transport her to the nearest hospital, where she was examined, diagnosed and had her initial brain cancer removed. I am so sad that she finally lost her battle with brain cancer.
 
As Shannon Stringer has noted, Ann loved the Churchill School, its students and staff, and the work she did. She filled many positions during her years at Churchill, from Reading Specialist to Curriculum Coordinator to Head of the Technology Department. She also managed the process for NYS grants for the school. She was a valued colleague, a sensitive mentor and a dogged advocate for Churchill's students. Her humor, insight and love for the students of Churchill were such that even after her initial diagnosis, she continued to work at the school for two years. 
 
I will miss her.

Please accept my deepest sympathies. I want you to know how important your mother was to me in learning to be a good teacher. She always found positive things to reinforce my attempts at creating new lessons and was the most encouraging person to be around. I love teaching history now and your mother played a huge part in that. I can always hear her in the back of my head encouraging and supporting me when I teach.

I am so sorry that you have to bear such a terrible loss. Ann was so loved by everyone who knew her.  Our friendship stretched back over 33 years.  We shared  many visits and phone calls; stories about our children; and the way we felt about helping children through our careers. My deepest sympathy in your loss of mother and sister, Ann.  It is great news about the impending new arrival to the family and especially sad that Ann didn't live to see her granddaughter.  It is a blessing that she passed peacefully in her sleep.  Bob and I always enjoying visiting with Ann and Art on Nantucket.  Ann and I corresponded occasionally over the years, especially in the years following Art's death.  Ann was a kind and generous person and a caring soul.  Her life was a blessing to us all.  May your grief be tempered with pride for who Ann was and what she accomplished.

Ben, George, Emily and the little one. We have lost our most beloved member of the family. As Ann and I discussed in our most precious and numerous telephone visits over the years, she missed Arthur terribly and often said she couldn't wait to join her darling husband.

I am terribly saddened to learn about Ann. It was a distinct honor to have been her colleague for ten years. Ann's impact upon the creation and development of Churchill High School was enormous. Oliver,  So sorry to hear this sad news.  Having been to MSKCC as recently as yesterday for a followup visit (all OK), I know that you are comforted by having your sister tended to by the best medical professionals any where.

Please accept our deepest sympathy for your loss. Ann was a sweet and rich soul and will be missed. We are comforted in the assurance that she is resting now without pain or suffering and will live in our memory and Gods.

Ann was a wonderful person who I feel privileged to have worked for and known as a friend. Churchill was very lucky to have her as an administrator and advocate for the LD community. I am saddened to learn of her passing, but I hope her family can take comfort in knowing any suffering is over for her. All the best to you guys.

I am saddened to hear this news about Ann. She lives on in wonderful memories of staying with her in New York and seeing her on Cape Cod and at family reunions. She accomplished a great deal and gave so much to others during her life, she will be missed.

My heart goes out to George and Emily and Ben as they say goodbye to Ann. She was a lovely woman, generous and kind. When Emily and George were getting married, Ann helped me to plan and host Emily's bridal shower, since I didn't have the resources to do it myself. She shlepped all the way to Brooklyn to pick out invitations with me, even though she didn't know me very well, did a video interview with George that we played at the shower, and welcomed all of Emily's girlfriends and family into her home for the party. May her memory be for a blessing, and may her family be comforted alongside the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

May you rest peacefully, dear Ann, good cousin.

Ann was a wonderful woman and mother. She was generous and kind and accepting of everyone she met. I am so thankful I got to spend time with her and I will miss her dearly. My thoughts are with George and Ben, I can only imagine their loss.
