Today, June 13, 2024, is the anniversary of my June 13, 1954 wedding to my dear departed wife Ruth.  Also, it’s the anniversary of the wedding of Mimi and Jerry Fine, who were married on that same day.  We had luckily met on our honeymoons at Harmony Hall in Bermuda.  

That was the start of a close lifelong friendship.  Jerry showed me his superb hi fi set up in their Queens apartment and I became a dedicated quality sound addict ever since.  We four enjoyed sharing many delightful times together in those early married years.  We’d traipse into Greenwich Village to enjoy folk singers. We treasured many other good times together. If we were not pleased with a place, we could count on Jerry to say, “Let’s truck.”  

We sadly journeyed to be with Jerry and his family at Mimi’s New Jersey funeral and then to their Port Washington home. Years later, Jerry and Anne visited us in Tucson.  On March 31, 2019, Ruth, like Mimi, died of cancer.  My annual anniversary call today was met with a dead line.  That’s when I Googled and found Jerry’s obituary.  Rest in peace my friend and thanks for the memories.

My sincere sympathy to all in Gerry’s family and Ann as well.  And a call out here to Helen Whalen, his right hand at Delta Corrugated. 

I knew Gerry professionally for nearly thirty years. He was simply the best. He knew the ins and outs of corrugation  better than anyone in the business. I worked in publishing and his guidance on displays for our books was invaluable. 

Gerry and I had  many wonderful conversations over the years. We both enjoyed theatre—and Gerry saw a lot of it—both here in NYC and in Williamstown.  We compared notes (and a good laugh) on many productions. 

And we both enjoyed a great joke. I liked short ones and Gerry liked a good long tale with a snappy ending. Sometimes you thought he was just relating something that had really happened—until he got to the punchline! Then there would be groans and laughter. As I got to know him, I would sometimes kid him,  “Gerry, can you cut to the chase? I only have an hour for lunch!”

He shared great stories about his family and his late wife,  both of whom  he loved. But also nice memories about his career and traveling with his lady fiend, Ann. 

Gerry was a rare entity in the world: a knowledgeable, caring, dependable professional and also a wonderful, funny, smart individual.

I have been retired now for several years but I know I speak for many who worked  in the book business—Gerry was both an indispensable contact for us but  also a terrific friend. He will be missed. I wish him well on his next journey!

Jerry was an amazing man and one of my best friends.   My family loved him dearly.  Jerry and I met close to 15 years ago at the Sid Jacobson JCC when he was seeking out a personal trainer and I had been working with him ever since.  Everyone at the studio loved Jerry as well and were inspired by his vibrance and his independence.   All though Jerry only worked with me twice a week he stopped by the studio most days for a visit or to bring me his leftovers from Saint Roccos for lunch.  My daughter was also very fond of Jerry and wanted me to bring one of her stuffies to work and take pictures of it.  Jerry was happy to participate.   This was picture we took.  Jerry was not a client he was an amazing friend and part of my family.   We loved having him over to celebrate various holidays and my father enjoyed meeting him at Saint Roccos for coffee, a pastry and a go chat.  We all miss and love you Jerry. You will never be forgotten.
