Lewis D. Cohen a noted and highly respected attorney, has died at the age of 88 at his home in Kings Point, New York.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Mr. Cohen was a celebrated criminal defense attorney for over 40 years, having tried an estimated 200 cases to verdict.
Mr. Cohen enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the end of World Word II as soon as he was old enough to apply, and later graduated from Syracuse University in 1949 with an A.B degree. He earned his law degree from Fordham Law School in 1952.
After graduation, Mr. Cohen became an Assistant District Attorney in Kings County, New York and also worked as a Special District Attorney for Kings County in the Grand Jury and Homicide Bureaus. After leaving the District Attorney’s Office, Mr. Cohen began a private law practice in Brooklyn, and was recognized as one of the finest defense attorneys in New York State. He was awarded the Kings County Criminal Bar Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.
An avid Syracuse and University of Virginia football, basketball and lacrosse fan, Mr. Cohen enthusiastically went to hundreds of games throughout his life and took great pleasure in cheering on his favorite teams.
Mr. Cohen leaves behind his beloved wife of 49 years, Maralin Cohen, his children, Douglas and Carin, daughter in law, Melissa, son in law, Terry and his dear grandchildren, Chloe, Carly, Alexis, and Alana.
