Charles “Chuck” W. Holmes, 90, of Greeley, died Sunday, June 21, 2015. Charles was born April 16, 1925 in Gardner, MA to Benjamin and Georgianna (Hubbard) Holmes.
Chuck moved to Greeley to attend Colorado State College of Education (now UNC) following his military service in the Army Air Corps as a parachute rigger, gunnery crew and B24 Air Crew. He received his BA from CSCE and MA from Colorado State College. He served as yearbook and newspaper photographer while at CSC. He began teaching in School District 6 in 1950, later becoming the Media Coordinator and Library Supervisor, retiring in 1988.
Chuck was an active member of the Colorado Aviation Historical Society, serving as a board member for many years. He received the Special Recognition Award and Laureate Award from the Colorado Aviation Historical Society, and is a member of the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame. He also served on the Board of Directors of OX5 Aviation Pioneers. He was recognized and well known for his large, personal aviation library and aviation autograph collection and was an aviation historian. He served on the Board of Directors of the Greeley Philharmonic and the UNC Performing Arts Board.
He is survived by his sister, Georgianna Goins, Ashburn, VA; daughters Karen Holmes, Centennial, CO, and Marsha Holmes and husband Matthew Switzer, Denver, CO; as well as 2 granddaughters, Emily and Sarah Switzer.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Goldie Holmes.
Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, June 26, 2015 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Inurnment at Our Saviors Lutheran Church Columbarium following the service.
