Charles was born May 21, 1926 in Hannibal, MO to Stanley and Helen Smoot and joined his sister Marge. He graduated from Hannibal High School in 1944. Charles joined the Army Air Corp and served in World War II in the European theater.
He married Mary Virginia Holman on August 15, 1945, his lifelong sweetheart. He embraced his wife’s family as his own as he cultivated deep relationships with her family, Rensel and Mary Holman, and brother John. Charles and Mary were blessed with seven children -- Becky Techau, Mark Smoot, Stephen Smoot, Deborah Anderson, Beth Nobe, Tim Smoot, Melissa Baker. Their family continued to grow adding daughters- and sons-in-law, 21 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Family reunions were a gathering of many boisterous activities, especially the one in Pasco, Washington in 2000. He was known to have affectionate nicknames for most of the family members as he was lovingly known as “Fa”, “Grandpa Jack” “Charlie” and “Daddy”.
Charles was an ordained minister of the Gospel of Christ Jesus. He baptized many members of his family. His strongest desire was to lead his family to Jesus and help them develop their personal relationship with Jesus and continue on in their Acts 29 journey.
The family moved to Northern Colorado in 1964; living and serving in Wellington, Fort Collins, and Loveland. Pastor Smoot served many congregations as his desire to be a reflection of Jesus’ love to any and all people. His response to the Lord’s call was always, “here am I, send me”. His greatest joy was ministering to people of all walks of life no matter if it was Sundaymorning or Friday night. His ministry as a teacher, encourager, prayer warrior, officiant, evangelist and friend gave him the opportunity to walk alongside believers and non-believers in whatever circumstance the Lord wanted him to serve. He enjoyed talking with people to understand their spiritual life so as to help them grow, as well as to learn from them. His sense of humor delighted many people as he wished to build bridges that nurtured relationships, the foundation of his true ministry.
As a gracious man wanting to encourage all he met, Charles was met by the Lord, who welcomed him saying,
“Well done, my good and faithful servant. Enjoy the companionship of those who have come before you including Mark your son, your loving parents and in-laws, and so many other family and friends you loved. There are so many here in the mansions prepared for the family of God. Your faithful devotion, loyalty, service and love are being richly rewarded.”
A celebration of his life will be held July 2, 2017 at 2:00 pm, at Grace Community Church, 240 Barberry Place, Loveland, CO 80537, with suggested memorial donations to Grace Community Church or a charity of your choice.
